The prevalence of GBV in Nakivale refugee settlement camp.
Nakivale Refugee Settlement, home to thousands fleeing conflicts in countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and Rwanda, continues to bear silent stories of pain and resilience. While the camp offers safety from war, many women remain trapped in cycles of violence within their homes. Sexual assault and domestic abuse have become tragically common, deepened by broken community structures and limited reconciliation efforts. Despite ongoing interventions by government and humanitarian partners, gender-based violence remains a pressing challenge — one that calls for renewed attention, collective action, and stronger systems to restore dignity and safety for every woman in Nakivale.

Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLA) approach.
Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) are transforming lives by fostering financial independence and collective growth at the community level. Comprising small groups of 15 to 25 members, these associations encourage regular saving, allow members to access small loans, and distribute profits annually based on individual savings. Beyond financial inclusion, VSLAs create a strong foundation for other community development initiatives — uniting members around shared goals and making it easier to introduce new programs and services that uplift entire households.
